Hello, my name is Janice Crane. Children have always been a massive part of my life. I graduated from Solano College in the '90s. I recently took a break for a few years where I helped with my great-grandchildren and have since returned to the field.
There is a saying: One child's laugh can make the darkest day bright. I genuinely believe this. Their laughter and joy are contagious—my two favorite activities to do with the class id science and reading.

The Role of Caregivers in Supporting Toddler Independence
While toddlers are busy exploring what they can do, caregivers play an important role behind the scenes. Gentle encouragement, clear choices, and patient guidance help children feel safe enough to try new things. Instead of stepping in too quickly, we offer just the right amount of support—what we call “scaffolding”—so toddlers can succeed without feeling overwhelmed.
You’ll see this in our classrooms every day: a caregiver offering a quiet reminder, modeling how to try again, or celebrating a child’s effort as much as their success. This balanced approach helps toddlers take ownership of their actions and build the resilience they’ll use for years to come. When caring adults believe in children’s abilities, toddlers learn to believe in themselves.

Encouraging Confidence Through Everyday Routines
As toddlers practice doing things on their own, everyday routines become powerful learning opportunities. Simple moments—washing hands, throwing away a snack wrapper, or choosing a book—teach children how to make decisions and follow through. These small tasks help build confidence, and that confidence carries over into new skills they’re eager to try.
In our program, we intentionally slow the pace to let toddlers participate rather than rush through routines for them. When children have the chance to help, they become active contributors rather than passive observers. Over time, those tiny steps turn into big leaps in independence and self-esteem.
